Qualifications
British Army
I began my journey with the British Army whilst at University in London, attracted at a freshers fair to the stand that promised adventure, fun, excitement and lifelong friends. I was sold. After 3 years with University of London Officer Training Corps, I had made friends for life and realised that a career as an Army officer offered the purpose and challenge I wanted in my life. Securing my place a the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst in 2005, I commissioned in 2006 into the Education and Training Services with two military academy awards for excellence and outstanding achievement behind me.
Whilst my career in the military has not been linear, I have served as a regular, reservist and full-time reservist. I have been fortunate to serve in Germany, Canada, Cyprus, Iraq and the Falklands and travelled the world to enjoy adventure training and many sports. I am very proud to have served my country, hold the rank of Major and champion women in the UK Armed Forces. My experience in the British Army has given me so much and one that I am very grateful for.
PhD Studies
In 2021 the House of Commons Defence Committee (HCDC) published a report into the lived experiences of women in the UK Armed Forces, the report entitled "Protecting those who protect us: Women in the Armed Forces from Recruitment to Civilian Life" was released in July 2021 and provided evidence and recommendations to the Armed Forces on how to make changes to better support women. Each of the Armed Forces were required to report back in 6 months on the proposed changes they were going to make to support women.
At the time of the publication, I was working in British Army Headquarters and had already written a PhD proposal for research that supported women in the British Army. I was very fortunate that my proposal was seen and taken on by the Army as a piece of work to support the British Army response back to the HCDC. Taking on this work has been terrifying and exciting in equal measure. The enormity of what I was about to do has never been lost on me and I have been so proud to do something that could make changes to support the women who come after me.
My PhD is an exploratory, qualitative piece of research titled "From Attraction to Attrition: The experiences of serving women in the British Army". There is a significant paucity of research on serving women in the British Army, as a serving Major (at the time of writing) I recognised that I hold a unique position as a researcher and have better and quicker access to research participants.
